TORONTO, December 7 2011 – The Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy is pleased to announce the winner of this year’s Innovation Fund grant in support of pharmacy practice research. The winner of the $50,000 grant is the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association-Green Shield Canada Hypertension Collaborative.
The collaborative will conduct a prospective, randomized, controlled trial to examine the impact of pharmacist interventions for hypertension management on patient outcomes.Twenty-four pharmacies in Hamilton, Windsor and St. Catharines will recruit and enroll 240 patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure. The control group of patients will receive standard dispensing services. The intervention group will receive a comprehensive disease management program including counseling on drug therapy optimization, advice on lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation, nutrition guidance, and recommendations on how to improve adherence to medication therapy.
The study’s objective is to examine the impact of community pharmacists’ interventions on health outcomes for hypertensive patients and demonstrate the valuable role pharmacists plays in chronic disease management.
“As the medication management experts, and the most accessible healthcare professionals, pharmacists are in an ideal position to provide high-quality, timely and cost-effective care for patients with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure,” said lead investigator Allan Malek, vice president, professional affairs at the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association. “We are delighted with the support that the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy provides for practice research, and their selection of our project.”
“Our recognition of practice research is gaining momentum and each year we receive some very interesting, and innovative projects”, states CFP President and Awards Committee chairman, Ryan Itterman. “This work is timely and should be impactful to the profession, given the expansion of services across the provinces.” he added.
Since 1945, the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy has been engaged in activities that promote the advancement of the profession of pharmacy. The mission of the CFP is to be a catalyst for change, developing and supporting evolving pharmacist care to optimize health outcomes. Through its Innovation Fund, the Foundation currently supports projects and research that facilitates this transition, and has invested over $400,000 since2004 to this cause.
