Dr. Wasem Alsabbagh, BSc. Pharm, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on improving health outcomes among disadvantaged and underserved populations through the study of medication use, healthcare access, and health policy. Using large population-based health databases, he examines how social, economic, and healthcare system factors influence the use, effectiveness, and safety of medications in real-world settings.

A central goal of Dr. Alsabbagh’s research program is to identify and address inequities in healthcare experienced by vulnerable populations, including individuals with low socioeconomic status, newcomers, rural populations, and those with complex chronic conditions. His work investigates barriers to accessing healthcare services and medications, as well as the impact of pharmacy services and healthcare policies on patient outcomes.

His research spans several areas, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, opioid-related harms, medication adherence, and pharmacists’ expanding scope of practice. Through collaborations with researchers, clinicians, health system leaders, and policymakers across Canada, he seeks to generate evidence that informs policy decisions and supports more equitable healthcare delivery.

In addition to his research activities, Dr. Alsabbagh is actively involved in pharmacy education and graduate student mentorship. He is committed to training future pharmacists and researchers to use evidence-informed approaches to improve patient care and reduce health disparities.
