Dear Friend of the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy,
Steven Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc., recently passed away, and while I never knew him and I don’t own an iPhone or an iPad, I think I will miss him. Worth over $100 million dollars by the time he was 25, he continued to build Apple into a global leader because he believed in what he was doing and knew that if he did it well, customers would follow. You have to admire what he has accomplished. I think that this key to Apple’s success is what will continue to define pharmacy services in the future – customer focus and belief in what you do.
Jobs once said, “Everyone here has the sense that right now is one of those moments when we are influencing the future”.This is the kind of thinking that drives the pharmacists whose profiles will appear in the Foundation supplement “The Changing Face of Pharmacy” that will appear as an insert in the December issues of Quebec Pharmacie and Pharmacy Practice. Amidst the uncertainty, these pharmacists have capitalized on all the opportunities to expand their services, and at the same time build a viable business.
This belief of “influencing the future” is also a key driver of our Board of Directors as they oversee the activities of the Foundation. In part, this motivated their decision to assist the Blueprint for Pharmacy, with their fundraising efforts.The Blueprint for Pharmacy is a collaborative initiative for managing the changes required to align pharmacy practice with the health care needs of Canadians. It represents a unified vision for the future of the profession in Canada.
Jobs also said, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower”. Innovation is at the heart of the Foundation as we continue to look for innovative practice research through our Innovation Fund. Thanks to the continued support of our many supporters, the Foundation is offering a $50,000 grant again this year. Our review committee is currently reviewing eleven new applications and is expected to announce the winner in early November.
The Foundation’s emphasis on leadership was also evident this year, with the creation of the Wellspring Pharmacy Leadership Award – inspired by friends and colleagues of Barb Wells (who passed away last year), this award will start in 2012 to recognize and support individual leadership within the profession of pharmacy. The reception in Ottawa in June, along with personal donations, has provided us with just under $50,000 to endow this award for the next five years.
Earlier this year, the CFP/TEVA report, which explored The Perceptions of Pharmacy by Third Party Payers, was presented at the CPhA and PANS Conferences. Slides are available on our website.
In 2011, we recognized a number of leaders who have made significant contributions to the field and profession of pharmacy in Canada.
Derek Desrosiers, President uniPHARM Wholesalers, and six-time President of the BCPhA, will be awarded the 2011 Pillar of Pharmacy Award for his long-standing contribution to Pharmacy. He will be recognized on November 8th in Vancouver.
The Saskatchewan College of Pharmacy was recognized as it celebrated its 100th Anniversary. This date that coincided with the Pillar Dinner for Mr. Bev Allen.
Bev Allen, Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, was awarded the 2010 Pillar of Pharmacy Award in March in Saskatoon.

The Foundation also held two fundraisers this fall. The Innovation Gala Dinner on November 23rd and the Pharmacy Forum on the 24th provided the audiences with insights from pharmacy stakeholders and leaders in pharmacy. While providing ongoing dialogue on “Who is Leading Change?” and “The Changing Face of Pharmacy”, these programs will raise important funds to run the Foundation and support our efforts.
This brings us to the last important piece of the Foundations current strategy for revenue – and that is the donation of individual pharmacists from across this Country. Your donation is important for several reasons. While it raises much needed revenues, it also sends an important message to our industry stakeholders that the profession supports these valuable initiatives.
What will your donation help us achieve?
Since 1990, the Foundation has invested over $1million in support of pharmacy through its various grants, scholarships and bursaries. In the past five years alone we have invested over $400,000 supporting innovation in pharmacy practice, through our research grants.
We would like to do more, but funding is needed.
