Her Heart, Our Priority: Transforming Alberta pharmacy into a highly accessible hub for women’s cardiovascular health
This two-year research project captures how community pharmacists can play a pivotal role to improve cardiovascular (CV) care for women living in rural Alberta, addressing long-standing gaps in screening, treatment and access to care.
This study builds on previous pharmacist-led CV care research by the EPICORE Centre, including the landmark RxEACH randomized controlled trial that demonstrated pharmacist interventions significantly reduced patients’ risk of future cardiovascular events. However, RxEACH did not stratify outcomes by sex, gender, rurality, or socioeconomic status, nor did it explore which intervention components drove change.
Phase one of this study is a sex- and gender-based analysis of data from four previous randomized controlled trials, including RxEACH. Phase two is interviews with women living in rural Alberta as well as pharmacists in rural communities to better understand barriers and opportunities. Findings from these phases will inform phase three, the design of a “Her Heart” pharmacist-led CV care model for evaluation in a future study.
