RxAccess: A bilingual community pharmacy walk-in clinic for minor ailments

The shortage of family physicians is especially acute in certain regions of Ottawa. At the same time, the public remains largely unaware of pharmacists’ ability to assess and prescribe for many of these conditions.

Dumitru Musteata, owner of the Orleans Community Pharmacy in Orleans, Ontario, plans to help fix that by opening RxAccess, a bilingual walk-in clinic dedicated to minor ailments. Outreach is targeting unattached patients through social-assistance agencies as well as engaging medical clinics as referral partners.

Aggregate data will be analysed based on conditions treated, family physician status, clinical outcomes and patient feedback. Musteata will also estimate cost savings to the public system. Finally, the project will produce the RxAccess Playbook available to all pharmacies, containing workflow templates, bilingual materials, the outreach strategy, and a summary of outcomes.
